The ZMI view of the script gives errors and warnings, without even having to test the script. This is very useful, although the messages don't give you line numbers, which would have been excellent.

I'd been using ExternalEditor, so didn't see the messages when saving in the ZMI.

(to anyone that uses the ZMI through a windows-based browser: using ExternalEditor and Gvim is fantastic - colour syntax highlighting modes for DTML and Python :)
