Well. I can't see what they are useful for. Before i18n attributes were 
added they were at least complete and allowed to switch to XML mode. But 
the XML mode of PageTemplates doesn't support i18n, so this use case is 
broken anyway.

And delivering XHTML as 'application/xhtml+xml' still causes a lot of 
trouble. So I doubt there is a need for switching to XML mode.

Given that the namespace specifiers are just noise. But on the other 
hand removing them did make noise in CVS, so it might not have been a 
good idea.
