Strange, I know people are using buildout stuff successfully on a Mac.

Anyway, the Tarek mail Brandon pointed out seems to say there's a 
monkey-patch in play that operates from timeoutsocket.py. The 
monkey-patch is in a module called timeoutsocket, which messes around 
with the ssl module and changes the function signature. Is there any 
chance you could have this installed into your Python? (look in your 
python's site-packages, I'd say).
