A comment to the paragraph below was recently added via http://zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZopeBook/2_6Edition/DTML.stx#2-4

    String processing is another area where DTML is likely not the
    best choice.  If you want to manipulate input from a user in a
    complex way, but using functions that manipulate strings, you are
    better off doing it in Python, which has more more powerful string
    processing capabilities than DTML.
