Turns out to be issues with Python 2.3. A checkout from Feb 1, 2004 
(just before Shane moved the ape-0_8-branch to the HEAD) seems to fix 
the problems. I guess maybe next time I'll spend some more time reading 
cvs logs before I spend a few hours with pdb.
