[Zope-CMF] formatting dtml-Date

Is there an easy way to format the <dtml-var Date> variable?  I'd like to
format this value on the fly depending on which page it is displayed.
"Date" appears to be a string so not easily reformatted.
"bobobase_modification_time" and "created" appear to be objects that can be
reformatted but are probably not the dates I want.  I think that I need the
"Date" date in an object that I can manipulate using something like:
<dtml-var created fmt="%a %b %d">
