[Zope-CMF] exUserFolder and Plone

Hello all,

Is it possible to authenticate users for a Plone site using exUserFolder?
I'd like to check the registering user's email address against a list of
email addresses and then give them a user account based on whether it is in
the list or not.  I don't know too much about how user authentication works
in Plone though, so if there is a way to customize Plone to authenticate
users that way, that would be great too.
