There seems to be a bug somewhere.

I just did some tests on a Plone site. Added a news item, set metadata=20
EffectiveDate to 2002/11/10, saved, and published.=20

Then I looked at the object in portal_catalog. EffectiveDate was ok, but =
the=20
index effective was still set to 0999/12/31

Then I updated the date again, and then everything was ok... added anothe=
r=20
news item, and it was ok...

I'll try to reproduce it, cause it does happen sometimes.
