Yes, that is the normal behaviour.

They are made available via "portal_catalog" (the embedded search engine).

When you like you can create a page that asks the "portal_catalog"
for all published (e.g. "review_state=released") objects.

Read the ZCatalog section in the Zope Book to learn how to
make "portal_catalog" (this is a Z Catalog instance) queries.
