[Zope-CMF] Where to start using CMF?

Hi,

can anyone help me how to start customizing CMF.
I must say, I don't really like its design.

So, I'm looking for customizing the whole design and plucking essential
components inside, such as discussion, news, etc.
But it is quite confusing on how each components work together in CMF.

There are also different portal types.
I know I need to start in "portal_skins". But after I customize the first
page and click on "news", the design changes totally.

So, is there any reference where I need to start and how are those portals
corelated?
