With "stock" CMF, you have three options for customizing the schema of
an existing content type:

  - Derive a new Python class from it in your own Product, and
    use the derived version, along with customized skins.

  - Derive a ZClass from it in a TTW product, and customize skins.

  - Script its creation (using ScriptableTypeInfo), and add properties
    to the object's default propertysheet.

The CMF Collective project has a CMFTypes product, which uses Formulator
to defing content schemas.  I don't know whether CMFTypes depends on
Plone, as I haven't had the opportunity to try it out yet.
