BDFL fiat:  we *aren't* doing TALES here, its too much the "Swiss Army
chainsaw" for this problem.

+1 for '$foo', with Paul getting the final vote, since he proposed the
idea and volunteered to do the work.

Please restrict further discussion to voting for a (non-TALES) spelling.
