Okay, for the benefit of others, that becomes a "yes, CMFSetup can store 
the roles to permissions map for the portal object". I should add that I 
haven't tested this to check that it works ;-)

Would it be hard to extend this so that it checks the roles to 
permissions map for subfolders of the site?
