I'd appreciate it if someone could explain to me why this is the case.

We have had a SiteRoot running on our intranet for many moons now,
and have never had trouble with it.  I chose it because it was the
simplest solution that worked for our issue (people accessing the
site from a myriad of different URLs and those URLs getting catalogged
and mailed out, and making them relogin because their cookies were
invalid.)
