You may be seeing "guts on the table":  "whoa, piggies" will be going
away soon, in favor of Chris McDonough's "configure; make; make install"
stuff.

This is a symptom of building via "old" mechanisms with a "new" Python.
Try this:

  $ python2.2.2 setup.py build_ext --inplace
