Yup, a traceback is essential.  But whatever the problem, the advice will probably be to try a current release of ZODB (3.2.5 is the current stable release).

Historically, packing gets these kinds of problems if the .fs file is corrupt.  In that case, packing is a bad idea -- the corruption should be dealt with first.  More info here:
