Zope currently ships with debug mode *ON* by default. This is pretty silly. People installing zope via packages or to deploy stuff on get a very slow Zope by default.

If you are going to do development with Zope, you need to learn a lot of things anyway, it does not make sense to optimize for this case - developers will locate the debug flag anyway. 

The people that know nothing about Zope but just install it (sysadmins, for instance) get burnt pretty badly because they expect Zope to work out-of-the-box as a server - and Zope gets a reputation for being slow from this too.

If I got $10 for each time our company have inherited a Zope instance running in debug mode on a production site... ;)

This change should be done in Zope 2.8, I would not change the current 2.7.x line behaviour to be consistent.
