It wasn't going into specific subdirs, so i've done some hackery on
the path.  (In the process of trying to unravel the contingencies i
renamed the trailing_slash_or_comma vars for a bit more clarity.)
This needs some more concerted attention to make the various (myriad!)
contingencies of kinds of invocations (new dir vs file update vs
various global syncs), paths being committed, trailing slashes (for
various rsync behaviors), etc.  Sigh.
