How about untested, but similar works in Python External method:

<dtml-call expr="manage_addFolder('newfolder')">
<dtml-call "REQUEST.set('newf',_['newfolder'])">
<dtml-call expr="newf.manage_addFolder('anotherfolder')">

maybe?!?
