Not 'a' in foo:

         record =3D { 'foo' : { 'query'  : ['a']
                            , 'operator' : 'not'
                            }
                  }


Not ( 'b' or 'e' ) in foo:

         record =3D { 'foo' : { 'query'  : ['b','e']
                            , 'operator' : 'notor'
                            }
                  }


Not ( 'b' and 'e' ) in foo:

         record =3D { 'foo' : { 'query'  : ['b','e']
                            , 'operator' : 'notand'
                            }
                  }
