Andreas, did you actually test this patch on 2.8 with Python 2.3? It
relies on a name ('_aliases') which is not present in
lib/python2.3/encodings/__init__.py. E.g.:
$ diff -ru lib/python2.{3,4}/encodings/__init__.py
