The fact that the "gold-standard" compiler for the platform is an
'apt-get install build-essential' away (or whatever the equivalent
meta-pacakge is for Debian, or 'yum install gcc', etc.) makes shipping
the source a better alternative for those platforms.  The OSX problem is
slightly hairier, but at least everybody has access to the same tooling.

The reason I called Windows users "tool poor" is that the vast majority
of them have limited or no acccess to the "standard" development tools
for their platform, including particularly the C compiler used to bulid
their Python.  Finding and installing those tools is a non-trivial
barrier to entry for those users, who thus must "depend on the kindness
of strangers" to get binary eggs built for them.
