[Zope] Serving files from disk

If I understand it correctly, Zope cannot serve files (txt,html,doc,jpg,...) directly from disk but can only serve "files" that have
been uploaded into the ZODB.

If this is correct, are ther any plans to make that capabiltiy available.

Alternately, has anyone written an external method that could be used to serve individual files from the filesystem of the machine
zope is running on (and any connected network drives)?
