Hmm.  You could use GhostScript to turn PDF -> PostScript, then use
something like 'yup' to do 4/page.

The "funny circles and squares" may be a viewer thing: check out a setting
in the Preferences about "text smaller than 6 point render as Greek" --
that might do it.
