Do you mean that Zap works but your Apache doesn't?  Did you try looking
at the zap.conf (it's really httpd.conf in disguise) to see how Zap does
it?

All of ours pretty much look just like Zap, that's how we figured out
how to built it ourselves.

Yep.  Setting up a Zope rewrite rule is trivial, however, when it comes
to putting a RewriteRule in your .htaccess file.  *shudder*
