[Zope] Publishing Python Objects with External Methods versus publishing Python objects Python objects

I'm trying to understand the distinction between External Methods and
directly publishing Python objects. The various tutorials on Zope discuss
publishing objects and there is one on External Methods.  Can objects be
published without using External Methods?
