[Zope] The XML-dtml notation "&dtml-variable;"

What is this &dtml-variable; all about?
Is it something that I can use or is it only for xml stuff?

I would like to put a variable in the title of a document within a Z class.
Can it be done?

I think that would be great. I have several places where I have to check
the existence of a variable before I use it. This would be much more
eligant.
