I think it's a bug, Jim. 

I've been playing with the same =

<dtml-if column1>
        <dtml-var column1 null=""><BR>
</dtml-if>

This also displays NULL ! Which means both the dtml-if
and the default null value are failing to recognise the 
null value in my variable 'column1'.
