[Zope] determining if a item is a character

I wish to prevent single character searches unless they are numeric.

I'm trying this in my zsql code without much luck

<dtml-if "_.len(_['sequence-item'])==1"> and
_.find(_.letters,_['sequence-item'])>0">

   do something here...

</dtml-if>
