If you want to stick with Basic HTTP Authentication, the key is to persuade
Apache to pass that info through.  On my setup, this involves adding the
following to the "RewriteRule" line:

 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l]

Also, the "RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*)" line has to be repeated
before *each* rule to which you want it to apply.
