This is almost a religous subject but here's my two cents
it depends on your experience and what you want to do.
i've run Zope on Suse6.3, redhat6.1 and mandrake7.0
the differences between redhat and mandrake for a server are pretty
minimal, basically the pentium tuning in mandrakes rpms which are
meaningless in the context of installing zope and python. so for the
purpose of this discussion i'll call them both redhat.
for automating startup of zope:
i personally found suse6.3 rc scripts to be alot easier to figure out
they have skeleton in /etc/rc.d/ which you copy alter and symlink into
the /etc/rc.d/"runlevel" directories you want to start and stop zope in.
try man init.d (in Suse)
for playing around with experimental stuff:
i would def. have to say go with redhat. if you want to play with stuff
like ZopeStudio(interface into Mozilla). Suse6.3 comes with a lot of
stuff in RPMs on CDs but requires a bit more experience to get stuff
installed from source and most sites don't offer suse RPMs which
generally aren't compatible with redhat RPMs. Suse itself doesn't offer
updates on most of its RPMs unless they're bugfixes for major programs.
for locking the box down:
i would go with Suse6.3. a good sys admin could lock either down. it
really depends on your experience from a sysadmin level. suse6.3 has a
pretty nice hardening script that passes SAINT with flying colors.
Bastille Linux is basically a redhat hardening script but i haven't
played with it at all and it tends to lag slightly behind the latest
version of redhat.
for a minimal install:
i would go with Redhat.
my choice: Suse, but thats my personal bias cause i think its a better
distro.
as for the other distros: the only other one i would consider seriously
is Debian, cause it has a very nice package management system through
which keeping your system updated is easy.
in summary: i really don't think it makes a difference, just go with
what you know.
