[Zope] Finding out if guest previously visited the site

I want to know if the user visited the site before and
here's why I need this: I have two main audiences
(researchers and general public) and I want to show a
splash page the first time someone visits the site and
let them choose between the two options. From then on
they should be able to see pages for their kind even
if they don't register. How can I do this?

I'm guessing using cookies or even finding out if
there is one for my site could be the ticket but I'm
not familiar with cookies and I'm wondering if there
are other approaches.
