Actually they use it via a special Helper Application that works with 
Netscape only ;( - on IE you have to drag-and-drop to a desktop icon.

They may use it _via_ javascript but Javascript is not enough to do it.

I have searched it and there seem to be lots of services that offer 
such DnD helpers, but unfortunately they work only with those 
services (mostly web-based photo repositories ;). It seems that such a 
DnD plugin is not very hard to write, even such that will work on both 
NS and IE. It may be even included in some sample plugin in some 
developer kit. Writing an open-source version seems to be a sure way to 
eternal fame (hint)
