No intel mandrake 7.1 actually was running 2.2.0 for about a year upgraded to
2.33 about a month ago but zserver only started misbehaving after an upgrade
from 2.2.16 to kernel 2.2.19. This may be just a coincedance.

Will let you know if I discover any thing.
