I would guess your version of tar is broken (AT&T tar on Solaris and other
platforms is messed up).  Use GNU tar instead.

Ops are: AND, OR, NEAR, ANDNOT

should work, assuming that you are just trying to search a single index.

There are also other tools to potentially consider like CatalogQuery, which
may give you additional means of searching:

How can I do advanced searching with a ZCatalog ?
Like : (A+B).(C+A) (but something that users can change)
and also with more importance on some variable critera.
