Ah, perhaps you should try making a regular user through the web interface
that has (for example) the manager role. Im not sure what effect using a
superuser would have, should be none, but I could see how it could mess up
the permissions checking.

Yep. Im not sure what else it could be though.

Nope that should be fine, it should only be a problem if you have written a
very unusual product. It sound like you havent.
