I too have the same problem with 2.4.0a1, can you check if ZGadfly is
available in the Products Pull-down menu, and had raised the issue before,
but was told that it has not been a problem.

I've got a python2.1 installation with 2.4.0a1 Zope. I've installed
MySQLdb-0.9.0 and tested it alongside python2.1. This is under Solaris.
On startup the ZMySQLDA product shows up ok in the Products folder (ie no
broken icon), but there's no entry for ZMySQLDA connections in the popup
list.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?

Aha!, cheers for that Norman - it's another data point. Nope ZGadfly is
*not* in the pull down menu but *is* in the Products folder and is not a
broken icon.
The mechanics of what is displayed in the pulldown menu seems to be in
OFS/ObjectManager.py, seemingly in the function 'all_meta_types'. Thing is,
I'm lost from there on in.
Does that help anyone a bit more knowledgeable than I to track this down?

I would like to setup the ftp server for zope so that it allows anonymous
access only. IE no user can login with ftp. I have been working with
M2Crypto and will be redirecting all http logins through https so ftp is
the only other security hole. I do want people to be able to batch
download some files from the site and they seem to prefer ftp.

Since I started this thread, I'd just like to pipe up and give my 2 cents.
-Zope does now have some docs. Great!
-Zope needs more docs. I'm thinking something along the lines of Java's
Documentation. I've written a few (never published) zope products and the
only thing I can say is that I'm still not sure why somethings work, but
because I saw the code in an example and it did what I wanted I used it. I
think the core Zope classes and their methods needs to be put in some sort of
document, indexed and possibly with examples.

Subject: [Zope] tar.gz for ZStylesheet available
Hi all,
although I appreciate the work by haqa that resulted in ZSTyleSheets,
I always find it annoying to always spen half an hour to convert all
the filenames of this package to be usable on a Unix system.
haqa mentions a tar.gz file in the documentation but there is none to
find on zope.org. It would be preferrable to provide only a tar.gz -
Windows users would have no problem and Unix users too.
I changed all the lowercase filenames to the "right" ones
yesterday. Everyone who wants to save the time to do it again may get
the result at
http://fte.tegtmeyer.net/ZStyleSheet-4.1.0.tar.gz
I didn't test it yet, so there may still be wrong filenames.

i have been trying to use ZCatalog with VirtualHostMonster
according to

everything should work right out of the box, but unfortunately, when objects
are indexed, getPhysicalPath() doesn't seem to getting used
e.g. i have site.foo.com and subsite.foo.com being served out of /site and
/site/sub using VirtualHostMonster
but, /site/sub/test_object is indexed as /sub/test_object, if i view it from
site.foo.com, and /test_object if i view it from subsite.foo.com
i am using Zope 2.3.2 and was under the impression that
ZCatalogVirtualHostFix had solved this particular problem
also, i tried to run manage_normalize_paths on my ZCatalogs, however, i get:
0 paths normalized, 21 paths removed, and 0 unchanged
where 21 is the number of objects in the ZCatalog

Subject: [Zope] Unique IDs
Hi,
What's the best way to generate a secure unique ID in Zope? I've tried
generating a random integer then md5'ing it, but trying to do an md5.new()
causes Zope to prompt for authentication. I'm running this as a user who's
an out-of-the-box Manager - what other permission is needed?
Or is there a better way of doing it?

One additional: using a hash algorithm does produce unique values in
many cases but doesn't guarantee them. If uniqueness is an absolute
requirement you have to check if a key already exists and generate
another one in this case (using a different secret f.e.).

Let me add my own piece...
imho zope is quite well documented. I mean, if you need to find a function
name and it's use, you'll allways find it in a few minutes. If you need a
dtml reference, you'll find it. If you need to learn python, well, buy a
book / see the online site.
Even the zope api is not poorly documented. (just tried docfinder of
Dieter - it's a great tool)
The feeling of people when they say zope is not well documented is probably
not because there is lack of "traditional" documentation.
What is really needed is implementations examples of canonical problems.
imho the most usefull parts of the zope book is the simple guestbook, the
file librairy, etc...
The same will go for the next chapters of dieter's book (current
implementation of a complex website)
All we (newbies) need is opensourced implementations of sites (an automated
faq, an e-commerce site, a news page, a thumbnail gallery, a guestbook, a
forum, etc...) I know those exists as products, but when you are able to
write products, you don't need this intermediate level of knowledge. and if
the product doesn't suit your needs, it's hard to customize it.
The "see source" feature of some zope sites is a great start. It could be
even better if they allowed you to donwload their sources... (maybe some
allow this?)
In one word : no real work needed from DC (beside some finer classification
of things), most intermediate docs could come from sources of existing
implementations. Experienced zope webmasters, I (an probably some other
newbie) need your knowledge!
And I know this is the role of how to's. They are a great source of help by
the way.
All is fine then ? Almost ;-)

Hi Stephan,
<dtml-var ObjectInstance> does some zope-specific
argument passing. This magic isn't available
if you do
<dtml-var "ObjectInstance()"> (notice the brackets,
the way you did it would just cause to render
something like <ObjectInstance at #2424234>
and wouldn't call the object).
If you do the above you have to explicitly pass
the arguments, i.e. REQUEST and _.
Take a look at dieter maurers excellent writings at
http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/book/chap3.html
for instance for a concise explanation what kind
of magic happens with dtml-var.

Hm,
out of interest, is there a way to be sure to get
atomicity for the above algorithm?
Otherwise there is always a small timespan in
which an object with the same name could have
been created - after the above check, but before
you create it.
Wouldn't it be simpler (in typical zope cases)
to just try to create the objects in the same
folder and just wrap the id generation
and object creation in a try/except clause?
And additionally - instead of using hashes -
just to use a timestamp?

The key thing I need is unpredictability - hence my originally wanting to
use md5 as the last step in the generation. The 'usual' way to do this is to
seed the random number generator with the current time, pull a number out of
that and then do an md5 on it. I've got a number of options now, I'll look
at them
However, this doesn't answer the first part of my original question - why is
Zope asking me for further credentials when I try to use the md5 module? I'm
guessing md5 is in the security sin bin along with re and other stuff... but
why md5?

I have had the exact same problem with Zope/IIS, and fond no solution. I got
the customer to use Apache instead of IIS so that was an easy way out.
Aparantly IIS is not made for easy collaboration with other servers :-).

I think there are many examples already there, it's just sometimes hard
to find them (and to be sure these examples are "done right").
Perhaps we need something like the open directory project (dmoz.org)
for some elements of zope documentation. OTOH, perhaps we already
have an effort like this with the ZDP. Only - my impression is
it doesn't seem to work very well, perhaps it's too ambitious.
One thing which I have missed often lately was a more fine grained
categorization of the howtos on zope.org similar to
that for the products. I just joined zope.org so I'm not clear about whats
technically possible with such an account, but if there's
need I would look into starting some smallish project that
makes it possible for the community to do that on ourselves.
But I admit, I think such functionality would better
fit as a core component of zope.org, but that would mean
work for DC. Also the possibility to comment/rate on
products and howtows would be nice, as would be
a fulltext search on all howtos.

Allen,
If you're still trying to share that database among multiple Zope servers,
you should check out the XMLRPCProxy product (available on Zope.org at
http://www.zope.org/Members/dshaw/XMLRPCProxy). It hooks two Zope servers
together in a way that lets you call methods of an object that lives on a
remote server as though the object was local.
You could set up one server to host the database, and share it by passing
your calls through the proxy.

Well, I found an amswer with the help of some people on irc channel
#zope (thanx Vladdrac!). Although I did not manage to get the
transaction control the way I originally planned it, I have figured
out why it did not work.
Zope rolls back the transaction automatically only when it thinks the
request went wrong. Because I had implemented a <dtml-except> clause,
Zope did not think something went really wrong.=20
I have changed the <dtml-raise> to=20
<dtml-raise type=3DRedirect><dtml-var
"error_html.absolute_url()"></dtml-raise>
(error_html is a DTML document that reports the error to the user).
Because of the redirection, Zope thinks enough went worng and rolls
back all the executed SQL for me automagically. So my problem is
solved.
