Please continue to cc the Zope list...  other folks may be able to jump in.

Consider using CatalogAware objects.  Search Zope.org for CatalogAware.

Alternately, manipulate the catalogObject and uncatalogObject methods of the
catalog manually as objects are added and deleted.
