Yes, there are references.  Do both things.  Also look carefully at Jacob
Nielson's Usability site, and possibly get his book:

Also, decide what kind of web sites you want to build.  There are three
types:

1) Make money.
2) Distribute information.
3) Gratify an ego.

Don't mix them together.  (This is not original with me but I'm sorry to say
I don't remember where I read it first)
