Netscape (4.x at least) does this. It really helps, too, that it
leaves the .gz on the file, and then WinZip (most windows junk too)
assumes that the extension doesn't lie about the contents.
Use wget to download stuff reliably, and use 'file' to identify what
type of file a file is.
