That is, once I realized the reason I was getting "bad interpreter" was that
I had scp'ed the file from my Windows box to my Linux box, so it had DOS
line endings.  That burned several hours, but in the process I got all
familiar with the script itself, so I suppose that wasn't too bad.

dos2unix is my friend.
