you don't really need to:

<dtml-in my_stuff mapping>
 <dtml-var x>
 <dtml-var y>
</dtml-in>

...becomes:

<tal:i tal:repeat="item my_stuff">
 <tal:x tal:replace="item/x" />
 <tal:x tal:replace="item/y" />
</tal:i>
