I dont know what the original problem was, and Ive never looked at
ZSyncer, so this suggestion might be completely irrelevant.....

xmlrpclib version 0.9.9 fully supports Unicode. Updating Zope's
xmlrpclib to this version is on the todo list for Zope 2.6.
