[Zope] authenticated but user still anonymous

I have looked around quite a bit for this one and haven't found anything
that helps.

I have a 'raise "debug", (self.REQUEST.AUTHENTICATED_USER)'
in my product.  I access a dtml method that in turn calls this particular
function and after authenticating through the typical browser interface I
see the "debug" statement above which shows 'Anonymous User'.  

Any thoughts?  acl_folder is at the root and I override permission
acquisition for 'View' and set specific roles.
