[Zope] testing for "REQUEST is not None"

If a method in a Zope product has REQUEST as optional parameter:

   def something(self, REQUEST=None):
     ...

why is the REQUEST always compared with None:

   if REQUEST is not None:
     ..

instead of just:

   if REQUEST:
     ..

?
