Make sure you have a Virtual host monster in your zope root.
Then try:
RewriteRule ^/(.*)
http://localhost:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/www.external_name.com/www/VirtualHostRoot/$1

(that's pretty much what I use on one of our servers)
