[Zope] [possibly OT] gadfly sql question

[AM]

I have a zsql method with the following query:

update data set down_count = down_count + 1

now down_count is in the table data in a gadfly db and is defined as an int.

However on testing this gives "cannot add int to string" error. It does 
consider the digit 1 to be an int. So what am I doing wrong here??
