I've had bad experiences in the past with things like this - ftpfs, davfs,
and the like. Because it's "not really" a filesystem as such, you end up
finding out about all sorts of things in your O/S that unconditionally
walk filesystems. It's a great way to lock up computers. Since I stopped
trying to use network-based filesystems on my machines (let the applications
do it, instead) I've found that my system reliability is a scary amount 
better.
