Ok thanks, I always thought Linux just had a 2G limit.
How stable is this?
The python docs do not sound very encouraging (my emphasis):

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
  On large-file-capable Linux systems, this *MIGHT* work:

      CC='gcc -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64' ./configure
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also is my Data.fs likely to be already corrupted anyway?

thanks

D
