Though your copy may end up needing repair after the fact; backup in this
sense is not transactional. DirectoryStorage has the best answer for this
at the moment (better than FileStorage), in that it supports snapshots, has
a built-in backup tool, and has a secure network-replication tool as well.

Nope. It's perfectly safe to copy the Data.fs of a running server.
